On September 30th 2018, the kickoff meeting of National Key R&D program “Nano Science and Technology”chaired by Prof. Xu Hou was held successfully in Xiamen University. In this meeting, the project team, school officials and invited consultant committee members including the CAS academicians Prof. Zhongqun Tian, Yong Tang, Prof Wenjie Shen etc. met for the official opening of this project and to discuss the general project structure and information. Prof Xu Hou presented technical content of the project. He outlined the main objectives of the project is to take use of the joule effect of carbon nanotubes composite membranes to create efficient, durable and energy-saving desalineation technologies. The project team believe this project would positively impact the desalineation field and provide a “tool” promoting “Blue Economy” to exploit the economic possibilities of the sea, while keeping environmental interests in balance by creating energy-efficient and durable techniques.

2018 Fujian Province Strategic Emerging Industries Special Project launch meeting was held at the Xiamen University. Prof. Xu Hou is the project leader and the leading scientist of this project. The project is supported by the Fujian Development and Reform Commission. Xiamen University presides the project and cooperates with the three other institutions, including the Institute of Coal Chemistry (Chinese Academy of Sciences), Third Institute of Oceanography (State Oceanic Administration) and Xiamen Bailin Water Purification Technology Co., Ltd..

The fifth specialist short courses " Basic Methods of Biomimetics" sponsored by the International Society of Bionic Engineering (ISBE) were successfully held in July 27 -28 at the Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Science, Lanzhou, China. Dr. Songyue Chen, Wei Liu, Yunmao Zhang, Xinwen Xie and Hong Pan attended the course and Dr. Songyue Chen and Yunmao Zhang gave the speeches during the course, respectively.
